According to Elizabeth Lee, Thomas’s great- great-grandniece, “Uncle Tom” spent the years between 1900 and 1903 experimenting with different types of wood and various shapes, sizes and positioning before arriving at an angled chair with a comfort level unmatched by any other.
These pine chairs will be painted like all my others, and the 2×10 used for the legs makes them solid as a rock and very sturdy due to the slayed leg style. I used the shape of the bottom back slat support, in the back legs braces as well as a filler strip attached with pocket screws to hide the bolts below the seat. The side leg braces act as the footrest supports which are attached by pocket screws as well. .

Several activities were available, some more conventional than others. Perhaps the most unusual was the bicycle blender. You want all of your pieces to match as closely to the template as possible. And you may have cut a few pieces a little rough, or not exactly on the template so you will want to sand the edges smooth. To do this you can use a spindle sander. I admit that I started out clamping matching pieces together to attempt to sand them together. But I eventually gave up on that and sanded each piece one at a time, stopping periodically to compare them to one another. This is the oscillating spindle sander that I have HERE.
The history of the Adirondack chair begins in the Town of Westport, NY with the inventor of the Westport chair - Massachusetts native Thomas Lee. Lee's family owned a house in Westport, and he spent many of his summers there around the early 20th century.
