Add all of the boards until your entire Adirondack chair is fully assembled. Then grab your orbital sander and give your newly built Adirondack chair a once-over to smooth any remaining rough edges.
The final aspect to consider is weight capacity. As for us taller people generally weigh a bit more than average height folks, the weigh capacity becomes a factor. Fortunately, this Highwood bakes up the wider seat and taller backrest with an impressive 400-pound weight capacity. Making it one of the best adirondack chairs for heavier people as well. PolyTEAK has gone out of their way to make one of the most stylish looking Adirondack chairs on the market in my opinion. This is in big part thanks to the design that looks like a nice wood finish but in fact, it’s not wood. It’s a poly-lumbar material designed to not rot, give you splinters or cause you maintenance headaches. .
As the story goes, during one summer in Westport, Lee felt a desire to create a chair that could handle the rugged terrain of the Adirondacks. This chair would have to be sturdy, balanced, and comfortable on everything from sandy ground to a small hill.
These are awesome! I love that you used a pattern for the pieces. I have no doubt your entire family will enjoy the nice weather…when it finally arrives, in your new chairs! Pinned!

Now install the back slats. To get the right look, proper spacing of the slats is important. Start with the center slat, placing it dead center in the back. I used four screws for each back slat, inserting one in the bottom, then made sure the top was positioned properly, then I secured it with three more. Be careful drilling the screw holes and countersink for the upper crosspiece as these must be done on an angle, drilling straight into the crosspiece, but at an angle to the back slat.
Porch & Patio opened its doors in 1951, with Sid Teitelman, and his wife Hilda, at the helm. They opened six stores and built a vibrant business with quality brands, top notch customer service and a strong devotion to their loyal staff.
Oh and yes I said fake because it it’s not really wooden. It’s a synthetic wood material now known as Highwood. Probably the closest thing you can get to the real deal. But of course without the tedious maintenance that wooden Adirondack chairs are famous for.
The back slats are the first slats to make. Prepare the back slats by using the patterns for the top edges as shown in the diagram on page 41, then band saw the shapes. Both back and seat slats should have their top edges rounded over using a 1⁄4” roundover bit in a router mounted in a router table. Fan out the back pieces in their proper order to make sure you rout the correct edges.
Built completely out of western red cedar, using plenty o dowel joinery and tasteful brass screws, this is a bit of a departure from the original plan which incorporated just 12 pieces of wood in its basic form and sometimes featured a footrest as well as storage under the seat. Taking to give this a try this weekend! This will be my first wood working project.
Whether your favorite spot is the beach, a campsite or your own back yard a comfortable chair is essential. This lounger has an extra wide back which allows space for pillows or cushions, extra wide arms to place drinks and snacks on, and a slanted seat & backrest that encourage reclining (slightly) in comfort. These colorful chairs boast a faux wood look, vertical lattice back and they’re UV protected to help retain their vibrant color.
Beautiful chair and I love the back ground information and the new web site to browse.
