Certain types call for annual maintenance, which is not only time-consuming but also expensive. Others will last up to 5 years before needing a facelift.
This is a very unique and beautiful chair as well as a neat replication of the historical chair made by Thomas Lee in 1903. Our Westport chair seat is made with five slat boards for better water drainage rather than using only two like the original historical chair. Our 9 1/4" inch wide arms and beautiful solid one piece back are made just like the original Westport. Available in Mahogany wood only. .
The first one to make an Adirondack chair was an American named Thomas Lee. He made his chair as he was vacationing in Westport, New York in the Adirondack Mountains in 1903. Called “Westport Plank Chair” Lee offered the design to Harry Bunnell who was a carpenter. Bunnell saw the possibility of commercializing the design and got a patent for it in 1905 without asking Lee’s permission. Bunnell manufactured the “Westport chairs” for the next two decades. The chairs were painted green or medium dark brown and each one bore Bunnell’s signature.

“Our great specialty is to supply everything that an Invalid needs; but a stock so large and varied as ours necessarily runs into comforts and luxuries that well folks want,” reads an advertisement of the Sargent Manufacturing Company of New York, maker of a variety of invalid chairs.
What is not apparent in any of these shots is long grain, thick strips of teak, glued and screwed to the bottom of all ground contact pieces of the chair. Cedar is quite poor for scraping or dropping damage, and sucks up water like a camel to water, but is otherwise fine. i.e. warm and light and soft. A real class act with finer details possible could be achieved in mahogany or ipe. chair adirondack cedar westport 99 1

Over the next 20+ years, Bunnell developed a successful Westport chair-making business, and he left his signature on each one. The Westport chair grew in popularity because of its durability and high comfort level, but as the years passed, the design began to change into the modern Adirondack chair.

Given the abundance of options available to us, choosing the right Adirondack chair can be a daunting task. First, you must decide on how much you’re willing to maintain the chair. There is wood, plastic, and recycled plastic. Wood can have a beautiful traditional finish, but takes seasonal oiling to maintain it and can splinter.
