To blog or not to blog?
In a previous post ( the-blogging-myth ) I expressed my concerns about blogging.
It is now a couple of weeks later and I learned a lot about blogging since. I am not shy to admit that I am a new blogger and that I am still trying to figure out what the big hype around blogging is.
This post is an update on the previous article.
I changed my perspective a little bit and the whole blogging thing makes more sense to me now.
On the positive side I learned that the blogging software I use (WordPress) is some of the best I have seen so far. I use a lot of pre-written software on my forums, free ad sites, tc and WordPress is by far the easiest to install and opperate and it is extremely customizable. You can use various templates and plugins. Installing these templates and plugins are very easy and just about anybody would be able to do it.
If you are new to web sites and you just want to create a normal web site for your new business you can even use the same blogging software to do that. All you have to do is create new pages instead of posts and turn off “comments” on the pages.
I also found that the search engines list your new information much quicker than normal pages. I read an article the other day that search engines like Google now perform “Live Searches”. One day when I posted an article on “Global Verge” it enjoyed the No1 spot on google if you searched for “Global verge scam” the very same day I posted it.
Traditionally blogs started as an online diary. Thus it would be updated regularly. I think that is why search engines gives preference to blog pages over normal web sites as blog content are supposed to be newer or more up to date than normal web pages.
In my previous article I made an ugly remark about some bloggers who post all kinds of junk on their blogs. Some people create a new post and just insert an YouTube video clip about a pop star or something silly on their blog. They do this with little to no content. At first I thought this was real bad but in the mean time I realised that not everybody have the time or knowledge to write proper posts. Adding video clips or excerpts from other blogs to your blog is an easy way for a novice blogger to get content on his web site and attract visitors to his site. I still think that one should try to add good posts as well and not only add video clips and excerpts to your blog.
My Adsense income from my blogs are still WAY lower than my other web sites. I also asked other bloggers about it and if I compare their click through rate on their blogs it compares to my blogs and it is like 5 times or more lower than my normal web sites. In the mean while I realised that perhaps visitors find what they need on the blog and they do not have to click on an ad to search further. I also think that the stats you get from a blog is a bit inaccurate. There are bloggers who use automated systems which search for relevant articles to post on their blogs. The server will count those visits as visits although it is an automated program which do not have the ability to click on an ad.
But even though the adsense income is lower than my other web sites a blog is MUCH easier to get started than a normal web site. For the novice a blog is a good place to begin with.
I also found that a blog is better for building your own personal brand than a normal web site.
Conclusion
If you are new to the Internet and you want to start your own web site then a blog might be the best way to do this. It is easy to install, modify and run.
Like anything else blogging is hard work. You will have to post at least new posts per week in order to make a success. To make a good success you would have to post at least one or more posts per day.
A new blogger must also not expect to make a killing within a month or two. This is something that will take time to grow. If you persevere you will reap the benefits. Unfortunately most people give up too soon. I read an article on WebProNews last week that 95% of all blogs are abandoned. People start it and then realise that it does not work as good as promised.
Will I do it again? No. This blog is doing well at the moment and I will continue with it. I considered opening a blog on more of my web sites but I decided not to. But do not let this put you down. I run about 80 different web sites fo which 30 are good earners. So my time is a bit limited. But if you start your blog and you focus all your attention on one singl blog you can make a success from it.
