10 ways to Negotiate your way to success

Negotiate

Negotiate

The ability to negotiate successfully in today’s turbulent economic environment can make the difference between being successful in your daily business activities or a failure.

Below are 10 ways that could assist in your client interactions. I  received these tips from Trevor Ketler who is a motivational speaker and also a skills trainer. Training people negotiating skills is one of his courses. You can find his details at http://www.ketler.co.za/ (Thanks for the tips Trevor)

10 ways to Negotiate your way to success:

Are people walking all over you?

Are you always on the losing side of Win-Lose situations?

1. Everything can be Negotiated.
To be successful you need to be assertive and not afraid to challenge everything. Being assertive means asking for what you want without demonstrating anxiety or anger. Assertiveness is part of the Negotiation process.

2. Listen and let the other party do the talking.
By listening, you are taking the role of a detective. Detectives ask probing questions and then shut up. The other negotiator will tell you everything you need to know – and more. All you have to do is listen.

3. Gather all the facts.
Acquire as many facts about the other company, their product, their current situation, what’s in it for them by having a successful outcome, what their options are, etc. You can’t make accurate decisions without really understanding their position. The more information you have, the stronger your position will be. Read more »

Dealing with Debt

Set your Goals

Goals

I received an email from Gary Wilde last week. The email was to invite me to his seminar. Although it is too late for the seminar I would like to post Gary’s email below.

There are so many people today have lost their jobs and who have to deal with bad debt. Gary has been in the same position as you and in this email he gives some valuable tips on what you can do about your situation.

To me the most powerful part of his email is this sentence:

“Finally and above all, I have learnt to appreciate everything I have, rather than long for the things I don’t have yet. Because of this, I live a life of abundance and gratitude every day and feel like the wealthiest man alive.” .

Isn’t that just so Powerful and true??

I hope that the advice Gary gives in this email will help some people to get out of the mess they find themselves in.

Dear Pieter,

I enjoyed a very successful career as a turnaround specialist and behavioural adaptation strategist and until 2005 I was ‘living the life’; with a huge house on a game farm, driving a sexy sports car and surrounded by all the modern day luxuries of life. I felt secure and optimistic about my future… but all this changed in a moment, when a business partner reneged on an agreement that was worth a small fortune. It was a possibility I had never considered.

Within a space of a few months, everything I owned (or believed I owned), was gone…. the house, car, TV, couch, fridge etc… EVERYTHING WAS GONE! For someone that had spent the last 15 years helping businesses and individuals turn the tides and achieve great success, I never imagined that I would find myself in the position where I needed to turn my own life and business around.

With nothing more than a small wardrobe of clothes and a credit report sporting numerous defaults and a hefty judgment from the bank, my sister graciously invited me into her home. Here I was afforded the time to take stock of my life and figure out how I was going to get out of this mess.

Having dealt with companies and individuals in distress in the past, I realised it was time to take some of my own advice. It was over the two years that followed, that I learnt some of the greatest lessons about life, human behaviour, relationships, business, wealth creation and the secrets to success. During this time, I paid off over R1 million in debt, cleared my judgment and credit defaults and put myself squarely on the path to creating wealth… this is how I did it:

1. Get grateful
Rather than succumb to the feelings of guilt, disappointment, desperation, anger and resentment that threatened to consume me, I chose to focus on what I could be grateful for. This placed me in a resourceful and empowered state and enabled me to acknowledge all the beautiful elements of my life that I had been taking for granted. Read more »

How to overcome anxiety

Worried?

I receive some  short and powerful daily motivational emails from Be Motivated Today. These emails became part of my daily routine and it covers all aspects of life.

I would like to share the one which I received this morning with you. There are so many people who have lost their jobs or who are about to loose their jobs. I though it would be nice to share this with all of you. Be motivated Today is the best online MLM I have joined during the past ten years. You can click here to see what it is all about.

Hi Pieter

Anxiety can be one of your biggest stressors. If you can overcome the worry habit you will eliminate a lot of stress.

Someone once said: “Worrying is like paying interest on money you have not borrowed.”

Worrying does not improve the situation.

And about 90% of the things we worry about don’t happen anyway.

The key is to be in control of your thoughts and choose them appropriately. So here’s how to overcome worry:

1. Consider the worst case scenario. Then choose to accept that this may happen.

What gets you to quit

Aston Martin

You must have a Goal

All successful (and potentially successful) people have pre-determined goals. You must have  a goal in order to know what it is you would like to achieve. You cannot shoot a target if you do not have a target.

But sometimes it happens that we give up on our goals. Why does this happen?

The email I received from Be Motivated Today this morning explains possible reasons. I pasted it below for all to read. If you read the message below you will realize how important daily motivation is. Zig Ziglar said “Motivation is like taking a bath. You have to do it every day.”

I don’t know what it takes to quit on your goals or dreams, Pieter. Some people give up at the slightest opposition. They figure the goal is just not worth the effort, I guess.

Others work hard and do what it takes for years and then suddenly lose the drive to carry on. Why?

Choose Your Friends

The late, Jim Rohn,  gives this advice about whom we spend time with:

‘We need to ask ourselves three questions in evaluating whether these people help or hinder the releasing of our potential.

Here is the first question: “Whom do I spend time with?” Make a mental note of the people with whom you most often associate. You’ve got to evaluate everybody who is able to influence you in any way.

The second question is: “What are these associations doing to me?” That’s a major question to ask. What have they got me doing? What have they got me listening to? What have they got me reading? Where have they got me going? What do they have me thinking? How have they got me talking? How have they got me feeling? What have they got me saying? You’ve got to make a serious study of how others are influencing you, both negatively and positively.

30 second Speech by Bryan Dyson (CEO of Coca Cola)

“Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them – Work, Family, Health, Friends and Spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the Air.

You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back.

But the other four Balls – Family, Health, Friends and Spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for it.”

WORK EFFICIENTLY DURING OFFICE HOURS AND LEAVE ON TIME. GIVE THE REQUIRED TIME TO YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS & HAVE PROPER REST.

“I’ve learned that possessions
do not determine your wealth
and that plastic credit cards
are “debtrimental” to your health.”
-Linda Ellis

This is so true. I know many people who are very rich but who are not wealthy. In general people have a whole misconception about what wealth is, it is not only the big bank balance or the Lamborghini in the drive way.

And the credit card part of the quote, also very true, ask me, I am one of those suckers.

It kills you.

If you are still young and you are reading this take this bit of advice;

Happiness doesn’t depend

“Happiness doesn’t depend on what we have, but it does depend on how we feel toward what we have. We can be happy with little and miserable with much.”

William Dempster Hoard - 1836-1918, Politician and Publisher

Character Test

This quote is so true and I think most of our government top brasses fail the test:

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.

Abraham Lincoln

Negativity will keep you poor

Negative people can keep you in poverty, by their comments. Yet the wealthy don’t listen to the negative comments of others. They see their goals and have done their homework. In the same way, when you learnt about Be Motivated Today, you realized that it could work. You read credible testimonies of people who are succeeding. You set some goals and you got started.
